I just thought I’d mention this blog, its on 80s and 90s house and techno mostly from the us. I think a lot of it’s in French, but some of it’s in English - there’s some great rips on there. Apologies for the lack of posting recently - very busy, but should be delivering the podcast as normal by the weekend.

A little bit late (sorry) but a new episode of my podcast has just gone up. You can choose between normal mp3 and enhanced m4a. Comments and ideas all welcome!

Remember when you used to record the charts? Well, here’s another way of recording on your Mac without using an programs that you need to pay for.

All you need to do is download Soundflower, which you can do here.

Once that’s all installed, start up Last FM software player. Change the soundcard to Soundflower (2ch).

Close down the player and then restart, and start playing something from the player. You probably won’t hear anything. This is good news at this stage!

Open up Garageband and create a new music project. Make a new Real Instrument track. If it’s coloured blue, then you’re doing okay.

Go to the garageband preferences, then go Audio/MIDI option. For audio input, choose Soundflower(2ch). Make sure the audio output is the built-in output (or your normal audio interface if you have one installed). It will ask you to confirm - click yes.

Now you’re back on the main screen. Select the blue track you made earlier, make sre that it is record-enabled (press the circular record button on the channel strip NOT on the transport controls).

Just to make sure that it works, and while the blue channel is still selected press the ‘i’ button at the bottom right hand corner. Make sure the input source is correct (should say Soundflower still), and select monitoring to be on (it’s defaulted to off, I think). As long as music is playing from your Last FM player, you should hear it through garageband. Finally, press ‘R’ on your keyboard (or the record button on the transport controls at the bottom of the screen) to record Last FM! Here’s a final screenshot with the monitoring turned on and the channel record-enabled.

There’s a breakcore album posted up in Core News called No Time To Waste. It’s got loads of 20 to 30 second tracks up by some very well known breakcore artists.

I thought I’d start a little series on here of music that I love, but haven’t had enough time to listen to! It’s not fair, but there’s only so many hours in the day.

Yep bjork is probably No.1 on my list. Why? Because she’s amazing. I’ve been following her music since her first album (to be honest, haven’t heard much of the Sugarcubes). I can’t think of any other singer, male or female, who’s done so much to develop a particular style - a perfect synthesis of soul and machine. She’s worked with so many people who are amazing artists in their own right (Graham Massey, Matmos) and she still comes up with something that uses the best skills that these artists have got. Anyway, I found some bjork mixes on this website here by fh+.

A few days ago I posted up how to record audio streams in OS X 10.5. At the time I didn’t have any server space so I the link that I posted to getting the automator scripts has probably expired. I’ve modified the Stop script - before it appeared to stop downloading, but the mp3 file was getting bigger and bigger! the new stop script definitely stops the download, as it stops all applications that are running. This might seem a bit drastic, but it’s the only I can figure it out at the moment - anyone who knows a better way is welcome to let me know.
